Solar Power - A Renewable Energy Resource

Solar power has been around for decades already. It is in widespread use in 1st world countries and is a wonderful opportunity to save our planet whilst still satisfying our planets voracious appetite for electricity. It would seem that with this solar technology at our finger tips everyone would rush to embrace it, but alas, this is not the case.

Take the case of South Africa. A massive crisis is looming because the power supply utility Eskom has not made adequate provision for the supply of electricity to an ever increasing market place. Eskoms funding proposals for the expansion of electricity supply is to impose tarrif hikes at 30% per annum for at least 3 years. That is an economic disaster because it amounts to more than doubling the current elctricity bill in that time period. This is because Eskom plans to build more coal burning power stations which as we know is going to have a massive impact on the environment. It will also have an impact on Global Warming no doubt.

The solution it seems is simple. Why not use solar energy? In a place where there is such an abundance of sunshine, it is an absolute no brainerto go out to the general public and business sector and promote solar energy as an alternative source for future expansion. The government should incentivise the implementation of solar energy in households and businesses to encourage them to change. How much carbon emmissions do you thing we can prevent using this type of strategy?
